CHALKIDA

Home  / Athens - Chalkida - Porto Heli

Situated 68km from the city of Athens, Chalkida is the gateway entrance road to southern, central and northern Evia. Due to its geographical location it has been a crossroad of cultures since antiquity. Today Chalkida is a cosmopolitan town built along the two sides of the Euripus Strait and is a highly popular destination.

The town known for the tidal phenomenon occurring in the Euripus Strait –sea water reverses direction once every six hours– attracts thousands of visitors who flock to its seafront to observe this special natural phenomenon. The beautiful pedestrianized seafront is the town’s main meeting point and a bustling area lined with many cafes and restaurants. Among Chalkida’s top attractions are the Red House which is the town’s landmark, and the Town Hall with its beautiful architecture and the neoclassical building with the four statues on the roof. Nestled on top of the Kanithos Hill is the Karababa Castle commanding a panoramic view to the town and to a large portion of the Evia region.

Chalkida, as well as the wider region of Evia, boasts an extremely interesting and diverse character. The southern part of the island is endowed with a magnificent natural scenery: gorges with lush greenery, streams, an indented coastline, long stretches of sand, idyllic island complexes, wetlands and mountains. Further to the north, the scenery assumes a different character with dense pine-tree forests, plane trees flanking river banks, waterfalls and rivers coexisting with splendid beaches.

Chalkida lies 68 km from Athens (i.e. a 40-min drive on the national road) and 91km from the “El. Venizelos” Athens International Airport (a 50-min drive). Chalkida is connected to the Greek capital via a frequent bus and rail service. From Chalkida one can easily visit the picturesque village of Arachova, Delphi and the Parnassos ski center which are 1-hour drive from Chalkida. A ferry and hydrofoil connection is available from Pefki in northern Evia to the Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonisos), and from the port of Kymi to the island of Skyros.
