ATHENS

Home  / Athens - Chalkida - Porto Heli

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the most enchanting and attractive cities on the European continent. It sprawls across the plain of Attica which is bordered on three sides by mountains and juts into the Saronic Gulf. The plain is dotted with high hills, the most widely known being the Acropolis and Lycabetus.

From an architectural perspective, Athens is a blend of styles, spanning the gamut from neoclassical to modern architecture; these varied styles are often found to coexist in a single district, thus, rendering the Greek capital a city of contradictions. Its countless districts and neighborhoods, each boasting a unique character, make up a multi-faceted, yet, charming urban landscape.

Entertainment-wise, options are virtually endless, since Athens combines all the social amenities and infrastructure of a modern metropolis with a vast array of cultural and archaeological sites. The city boasts a rich cultural life and is home to numerous venues showcasing many events, theatrical plays and concerts. The historical center of Athens abounds with museums, archaeological sites and venues, the most notable among them being the sacred rock of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the new Acropolis Museum which opened its doors to the public in 2009 and is a highly popular attraction. The areas situated within the boundaries of the historical center, such as Plaka, Monastiraki and Thiseio, are among the most colorful districts in the capital and are teeming with small shops, taverns, cafes, theatrical stages and street markets.

Just a few kilometers away from downtown Athens, there is an idyllic coastline, extending from Faliro to Sounio. Suburbs such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonisi and Sounio boast enticing beaches --most of which have earned blue flag status-- along with a host of retail stores, gastronomic spots, cafes and lodging establishments meeting high quality standards. The southern suburbs are connected to the city center by a tram.

The
northern part of Athens is dominated by the upgraded main Olympic Complex. The area was extensively redeveloped according to the design of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava with steel arches, landscaped gardens, fountains, futuristic glass structures and a landmark new blue glass roof which was added to the main stadium. The northernmost suburbs such as Kifissia, Politeia, Drosia and Ekali, are an oasis of greenery just a few kilometers from downtown Athens and are home to luxury shopping centers, stylish restaurants and cafes.
